What to Eat and Drink When You Have a Heartburn
Have ever enjoyed a great meal only to have a fiery feeling that spoils the whole experience? Heartburn is such an unpleasant way to remember a great meal. Spicy foods, citrus, tomato sauces and vinegar are some of the foods that may intensify heartburn. Other sources include fatty and fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, onions, peppermint, carbonated drinks and alcohol.
When you are having a heartburn, some foods can help fight it. These foods should be more low-acid foods like:
Melons and bananas
Most fruits have a high acid content but melons and bananas do not. Bananas especially come in handy as a snack food. Every kind of melon is good for curbing heartburn be it watermelon, cantaloupe or honeydew.
If you are looking for a great way to kick start your day, then oatmeal is the perfect meal for you. It does not cause any reflux. In addition, it provides your body with lots of healthy fiber and gives you a feeling of satiety such that you can stay for a while without having another meal during the day.
When choosing your bread, you should go for whole-grain bread that is made from unprocessed grains. The other breads that may sound healthy like wheat, whole-wheat or 7-grain breads may be made from refined grains which have been stripped of natural fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Whole-grain bread is rich in fiber and other nutrients which can help curb your heartburn.
Rice and couscous
Rice and couscous are healthy and complex carbs which are great if you have reflux. You should choose brown rice over white rice because the former has more fiber.
Vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, green beans, celery and cauliflower have a low acid content and are great if you are having heartburn issues.
Lean poultry and meats
Your chicken should be grilled, boiled, baked or steamed but never fried. Ground beef or steak is also fine as long as they are lean.
Sweet potatoes and any other kind of root vegetables are great for heartburn. However, onions are a no-no.
Your fish should be grilled, poached or baked. You should not fry it or use fatty sauces to prepare it. The method of preparation is quite important.
Egg whites are a good source of protein. They are also low in acid. Don’t take the yolk as it is more likely to cause symptoms.
Aloe vera helps with reflux. You can buy it as a plant or as a supplement in form of capsules, juices etc.
Ginger soothes the stomach and helps reduce the production of stomach acid
Yogurt helps to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux
Low-fat and fat-free milk helps. Almond milk is effective as it is alkaline and neutralizes acidity.
Unfortunately, you cannot tell acidic food by looking at it but you can research a food’s pH which is a score of its acid content. The lower the pH, the higher the acid content. Aim for foods with a pH of 5 and above
