What to Eat and Drink When You Have a Cold

Colds are probably the most common condition that individuals have to deal with. They can be irritating at times.  It is so important for you to eat the right foods because certain foods have the powerful properties that can support your body while it’s fighting an illness. In addition, they may relieve certain symptoms and help you heal quickly.

The best foods for a cold include:

  • Chicken soup

This has been the recommended remedy for common cold for years and for good reasons. It is easy to eat and it provides all the vitamins, minerals, calories and protein which your body needs in large quantities. Chicken soup is also an excellent source of fluids and electrolytes which are necessary for hydration which is especially important if you have a fever.

Chicken soup is also effective in clearing nasal mucus than other liquids. It is a natural decongestant. It also inhibits the action of neutrophils, white blood cells that can cause symptoms such as coughing and a stuffy nose. Chicken soup has the ability to inhibit these cells and is so effective against some cold and flu symptoms.

  • Broths

Broths contain lots of calories, vitamins and minerals. When drank hot, they act as a natural decongestant because of the hot steam. Bone broth is especially good and many claim has healing properties.

  • Garlic

Garlic is a medicinal herb with antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal effects. It helps to stimulate the immune system which is great when you are having the cold.

  • Hot tea

Tea is a favorite for treating symptoms of colds and flu. It acts as a natural decongestant thus helping to clear the sinuses of mucus. It should be hot enough to act as a decongestant but not too hot to irritate your throat. Seeping tea helps you stay dehydrated while relieving congestion simultaneously. Black tea contains tannic acid which decreases the amount of bacteria growing in the throat. Echinacea tea shortens the length of cold and flu symptoms.

There are several types of teas that are specific for relieving cough and throat pain that you should try out.

  • Honey

Honey has potent antibacterial effects. It stimulates the immune system and can help soothe your throat. Honey has shown evidence in suppressing coughing in children but it shouldn’t been given to children under 12 months of age. When you have a cold, mix the honey with milk, water or tea.

  • Ginger

Ginger tea has anti-bacterial properties which come in handy when you have a cold.

  • Spicy foods

Spicy foods causes a running nose because they break up the mucus and clear out the sinus passages. Capsaicin for example thins out mucus making it easier to expel but it also stimulates mucus production. The spice also helps to relieve cough.

  • Yogurt

Yogurt is rich in calcium and probiotics which helps colds to heal faster and even reduce your risks of getting a cold in the first place.

These foods are great to set you on the course of a quick recovery and back to normal life.
